Lindsay Lohan put on 90 days residential Jail and then Rehab

Lindsay Lohan’s future includes a new fashion line, two new movies, some time in jail and another stint in rehab. The actress was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail and 90 days in a residential substance-abuse program for violating her probation stemming from two separate 2007 cases of driving under the influence of cocaine and alcohol. She is to surrender and begin her jail sentence July 20. Rehab will follow.

The punishment, levied by Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel, will keep Lohan from promoting “Machete,” the Robert Rodriguez action film due in theaters in September. Fox, which is releasing the film, had no comment Tuesday.

Lohan’s jail and rehab sentence will also delay production on “Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story,” in which the 24-year-old actress plays the starring role. Writer-director Matthew Wilder said after the ruling that he and his crew remain “100 percent behind Lindsay. We are proud to have this remarkable artist work on our film,” he said.

Lohan’s sentence may also prevent her from further promoting her new fashion line, 6126. The first items from the 280-piece collection are shipping out to department stores nationwide this month. Lohan was instrumental in the line’s design and marketing plans and is featured in its promotional materials. Her business partner, Kristi Kaylor, did not immediately respond to phone and e-mail messages seeking comment.

Lohan’s agent, Nick Styne, declined declined to comment Tuesday. Her manager, Jason Weinberg, did not respond to an e-mail request for comment. Kerry Wallum, a producer with Lucky Films, said Lohan was in negotiations for a role in the upcoming Willie Nelson flick, “The Dry Gulch Kid,” and that the production would wait for her if she wanted the part.

“We’re behind her,” he said Tuesday. “We’ll wait until this entire blow over.” Revel chastised Lohan for missing a court hearing in May while at the Cannes Film Festival and repeatedly skipping out on court-mandated alcohol-education classes. She said Lohan lied about using drugs and tried to blame others for the two driving offenses when the original charges were filed.

Twilight’’ Eclipse Grosses $162 million in five days

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” knocked off “Toy Story 3” as the top film in U.S. and Canada this weekend, earning $69 million for Summit Entertainment LLC.

“The Last Airbender” placed second with $40.7 million in its first weekend after opening July 1 for Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, Hollywood.com Box-Office said yesterday in an e-mailed statement. The fantasy is the first M. Night Shyamalan-directed movie to be released in 3-D.

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” opened June 30, taking in $68.5 million in its first day in U.S. and Canadian theaters, breaking the record for a Wednesday debut, according to Box Office Mojo, a research company in Sherman Oaks, California. Ticket sales for the first five days of release for the vampire drama total $161.7 million, Hollywood.com Box-Office said. The film is the third of five in the “Twilight” series, starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

“There was no surprise with how ‘Eclipse’ performed,” said Brandon Gray, president of Box Office Mojo, a research company in Sherman Oaks, California. “It’s riding on the wave of the franchise.”

“Toy Story 3” fell to third with $30.2 million for Walt Disney Co.’s Pixar Studio. The movie has taken in $289 million since its June 18 release, Hollywood.com said. The 3-D sequel brings back Tom Hanks as the voice of Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, who lead the toys in an escape from daycare to reunite with their owner, Andy.

Rumors are going on that Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner may be surprising fans tonight at local NYC Movie Theaters to celebrate the 4th of July and Twilight Eclipse. Summit has released information that some cast members will attend random Twilight Eclipse Shows to surprise the fans. We tried to contact agents of both of these young stars to see if this was true but got no reply. One source in the entertainment arena around NYC says Pattinson will be part of the Macy’s Fireworks 2010 show that will air tonight on NBC.

Actually closed source said it will be either Pattinson or the hunky Taylor Lautner on the show. Rumors have been flying that the pair will go around NYC tonight and surprise fans by attending random theaters. So if you go see Twilight Eclipse tonight, you might get to meet Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner. Of course this could be a rumor spread by the nice people at Summit because Twilight Eclipse sales have flattened out today.

New Burlesque photos of Christina Aguilera reveal her image in the movie

More than a year before Christina Aguilera got back into the pop music game with Bionic, her first studio album since 2006, the singer decided to explore some artistic territory she’d never visited before: the big screen. In May 2009, Xtina signed on to star in “Burlesque,” a musical about a small-town girl who dreams of becoming a star. Now, we’re finally getting our first look at Aguilera in the fall release.

“It’s sexy, it’s sensual,” Aguilera told USA Today. “The whole idea of burlesque has always intrigued me. The art of the tease, the dance, beautiful women — need I say more?”

All that and more is on display in photos published by USA Today. One image captures Aguilera in a leg-revealing, gold bodysuit as dancers flip and bow around her. Is this the film’s climactic scene? Is it a dream sequence? Fans will have to wait until the movie hits theaters in November to find out.

Other pics show Aguilera with longer blonde locks: in her kitchen and at a nightclub with co-star Cher. “I love no-bullsh– women, and she’s the best of the best, an original trendsetter in her time and a legend in mine,” Aguilera said of Cher, who plays the owner of the burlesque club in the film. “I found her kind and warm. She had helpful advice and stories for days.”

But Aguilera didn’t seem to need much advice, according to writer/director Steven Antin, who told the newspaper she didn’t take long to get the hang of a movie set.

“She figured out how it works within weeks,” Antin said. “She is a little bit of a freak of nature and a perfectionist. This girl is a movie star.”

What appealed to her about the role, Aguilera said, was that her character “wasn’t just a girl who comes to L.A. and makes it big. It was a girl who had suffered and felt pain, been in seven foster homes. She doesn’t let her past make her a victim. And that to me was so appealing.”

Playing the character was so appealing, in fact, that the pop singer is already looking forward to taking on more movie roles. “I think people will definitely feel energized and excited,” she added.

Paris Hilton Questioned by Police regarding Drug Probe

Hollywood socialite Paris Hilton was arrested after a World Cup match in South Africa Friday on suspicion of marijuana possession but subsequently released without charge.

The 29-year old great-granddaughter of Hilton hotels founder Conrad Hilton and her friend Jennifer Rovero were taken into custody after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup quarter-final game in the South African coastal city.

Rovero, who describes herself as a former Playboy playmate, model and actress on her website, was sentenced to a fine of 1,000 rand ($130) or 30 days in jail for smoking a marijuana joint. Her lawyer told the court she was in South Africa to cover the World Cup as a freelance photographer.

“They were together, but we didn’t have a case against Hilton. The joint was in Rovero’s possession, not Hilton’s,” the prosecutor told Reuters.

Hilton arrived at the special court hearing in the South African city of Port Elizabeth looking tense and wearing a beige sleeveless cardigan, boots and green trousers. Her publicist issued a statement calling the arrest a misunderstanding.

“Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana,” the statement read.

“However I can confirm that the incident was a complete misunderstanding and it was actually another person in the group who did it. The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made.” South Africa set up 56 special courts to deal swiftly with cases involving visitors for the World Cup.

Hilton made world headlines in June 2007, when she was spent three weeks in a Los Angeles jail for violating her probation in an earlier reckless driving charge. The wafer-thin blonde, who has worked as a model, singer, actress, fashion designer, reality TV star, has since adopted a lower public profile.

However she remains a staple on red carpets around the world for movie premieres, night-club openings, and as a celebrity endorser of products ranging from wine to clothing. The celebrity heiress arrived in South Africa Thursday, according to her posts on Twitter. After her release, she sent a post to reassure her fans that all was well:

“Hey guys, there’s a lot of crazy rumors going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine. I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn’t do anything. I was assisting the police with the investigation and answering their questions. Everyone was super nice and friendly to me. I love South Africa! Such an amazing place, especially during The World Cup!”

At the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court in North End, journalists and photographers flocked to cover her pending court appearance, and our reporter was among those asked to leave just before her appearance. News of her encounter with the law was meanwhile being reported on the Internet and by local broadcasters.

The Dispatch was the first to break details of the drama on the web with a post on our DispatchNow breaking news service, which was swamped with users within minutes.

Paris Hilton’s own wildly popular Twitter feed carried no hint of the drama she was apparently facing in Port Elizabeth. Two hours after her apparent interrogation by police she tweeted: “It’s so beautiful here. I can’t wait to go on the Safari this week and see all the amazing animals.” She had earlier published gushing reports on her experiences in South Africa during the World Cup.

Garfield as new Spiderman

Wait before you think that it fat Garfield is going to wear the suit of Spiderman and fling across the high buildings of NYC. There’s a new Spider-Man in town.

Andrew Garfield, whose credits include last year’s Heath Ledger film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” has been cast as Peter Parker, the average youth who transforms into a superhero, in the next “Spider-Man” movie, distributor Sony Pictures announced Thursday.

The as-yet-untitled “Spider-Man” film begins shooting in December and is due in theaters July 3, 2012. Marc Webb, who made the romance “(500) Days of Summer” is directing.

Garfield and Webb got the jobs after star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi, who made three blockbuster “Spider-Man” films together, departed amid story and scheduling issues over a fourth movie.

“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents,” Webb said. “He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Among Garfield’s other credits are director David Fincher’s upcoming “The Social Network,” about the founders of Facebook, and Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan’s upcoming drama, “Never Let Me Go.” Garfield also starred in the acclaimed British drama “Boy A.”

Garfield was born in the United States, but was raised in England. “In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer,” said Avi Arad, one of the producers on the “Spider-Man” franchise. “We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

The new film, which will be shot in 3-D, focuses on a younger Peter Parker, the Marvel Comics hero who gains superpowers after he’s bitten by a radioactive spider.

Larry King calls it quits

Larry King was flying back to Los Angeles after interviewing basketball superstar LeBron James at his home in Akron, Ohio, earlier this month when it hit him. “I said, ‘I can’t top this,’ ” King recalled in an interview Tuesday. “I’m not getting younger. I want more time with other things. It’s time to go.”After a quarter century as host of “Larry King Live,” the centerpiece of CNN’s prime-time lineup and a required stamping ground for striving politicians and contrite celebrities, the 76-year-old announced Tuesday that he will be leaving the program this fall.In a nod to how much the medium has changed since King began broadcasting in 1957, he broke the news himself on Twitter.

“The daily grind is tough,” King said in a phone call moments after his tweet went out. “And there are aspects of it, you know, when you’ve got to do tabloid shows, which is the nature of the business, you’ve got to do the girl that’s missing in Aruba. It’s hard to make the case that that is major news, but that’s what news is today. And my curiosity runs to that, but not nightly.” King will not be retiring completely: He signed a new contract to host specials on the cable news channel. But his departure from prime time marks a major turning point for CNN, which has built its schedule around “Larry King Live” for 25 of the network’s 30 years on the air.

“He is the very definition of legend,” said Geneva Overholser, director of USC Annenberg’s School of Journalism. “He has been such a mainstay of CNN’s programming for so long that it’s almost impossible to imagine it without him…. You just expect that whatever happens in the world, we’re all going to get Larry’s take on it. It’s going to be a real dramatic change.” King logged more than 40,000 sit-downs with newsmakers since his first radio show 53 years ago, according to CNN. The host often referred to himself as an interviewer, not a journalist — an identification that did little to mollify media detractors who criticized King for being too lenient with his guests. CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein said that “this isn’t just a big moment for CNN, it’s a big moment for cable television.”

“He created the habit of tuning into cable at night,” Klein said in an interview. “He made it OK to watch cable. It is a big historic inflection point.” King’s decision comes as the network has suffered a steep falloff in the ratings this year and is battling the perception that it has lost its potency. Although “Larry King Live” was the network’s top-rated show for years, the program’s audience declined sharply this year, averaging 723,000, down 40% from the same period last year, according to Nielsen. (His ratings were up 10% in June compared with May, buoyed by interviews he with James and President Obama, which were promoted as part of his 25th anniversary on the air.) The diminished viewership prompted speculation that CNN was looking to replace King, but the affable interviewer insisted Tuesday that the network never asked him to step down.

Twilight Eclipse Gets Tremendous Response

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third film based on Stephenie Meyer’s wildly popular vampire novels, is pretty much more of the same. Team Jacob is still hotter. Actor Taylor Lautner spends most of the movie shirtless as Jacob Black — when he’s not shape shifting into a hulking wolf.

Robert Pattinson’s brooding vampire, Edward Cullen. still has the better hair and more dramatic lips — distractingly ruby-red, at times.

And Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan, the object of their affection, is much less morose than in the earlier films. This may be because there is some steamy kissing with both Edward and Jacob.

This is definitely the most romantic of the films, although some of these scenes are set in flower-filled meadows that bring to mind feminine-hygiene commercials. The action sequences are harder-edged, and occasionally exciting, especially the scenes of vamps who sprint and run in mid-air, as if in flight. But it’s still hard to see what all the fuss over ordinary Bella is about. And that inexplicable fuss is at the core of a love triangle introduced in the second film and drawn out in this one.

Bella really loves Edward and sort of loves Jacob. It’s high school, after all. Still, she’s not exactly torn between two lovers. Despite some potent chemistry with Jacob, Edward is the guy for Bella, and she’s willing to become undead to prove it.

Scenes in which she conveys a subtle sadness over her impending “change” are among the movie’s best, but they are short-lived. Mostly there’s a lot of nonsense about a vampire army of “newborns,” who have been recently transformed and are more violent and unpredictable for it.

We are shown more of the historical lineage of the Cullen family of vampires and a bit of lore about Jacob’s Quileute tribe. But these back stories are fleeting and presented in a clichéd, pastiche style. While director David Slade’s unnerving psychological drama Hard Candy (2005) was fascinating in its unpredictability, he is hampered here by Meyer’s leaden plot, adapted like the previous ones by Melissa Rosenberg. Early scenes have a gritty tension, but the rest of the movie, with its slow pacing and lackluster cinematography, doesn’t live up to that initial promise. An appearance by the Italy-based vampire powerbrokers, the Volturi (led by Dakota Fanning) feels tacked on.

Edward’s courtly wooing of Bella has its charms. “You’ll always be my Bella,” he tells her sweetly. Jacob has an appealingly friendly bluster and some of the best quips.

He comes to Bella’s rescue on a snowy mountainside where she lays in a tent shivering uncontrollably. Edward, whose skin shimmers and has a marble texture, is powerless to help her. But Jacob, whose body temperature runs toasty, gallantly offers to warm her up. “Let’s face it: I’m hotter than you,” he tells his rival, and the audience laps it up.

The huge contingent of girls — and women with girlish fantasies — who liked the first two movies will doubtless enjoy Eclipse. But this third go-round won’t make Twihard converts of the rest of us.

Fans Flock to ‘Twilight Eclipse’ with lots of expectations from the film

While much of US was glued to its TV screens to watch the U.S. play Ghana in the World Cup, hundreds of Twi-hards wrapped around the block outside of downtown’s Gusman Center of the Performing Arts in anticipation of “Twilight Night,” a celebration of Eclipse, the newest addition to the supernatural-film franchise.

“Twilight Night” occurred in 12 different states, coinciding with the lunar eclipse. The event featured a fortuneteller, trivia games, photo stations, a band playing songs from the movie soundtrack, henna tattoo artists, and Twilight themed-makeovers.

For the uninitiated, Twilight hinges on a love triangle between the mortal Bella, vampire Edward Cullen and werewolf Jacob. Fans take their allegiances very seriously.

Those on team Edward got shades of icy blues while team Jacob die-hards were made-over with a browner, more wolf-friendly palate.

The highlight of the night was a viewing of New Moon, the previous film in the series, and a live appearance by Michael Welch, who plays Mike Newton, a human with a crush on Bella.

According to Summit Entertainment, the production company, approximately 200 fans with dark bottom eyeliner and homemade shirts — one read “Save Gas, Drive a Cullen” — gathered at 5 a.m. to get wristbands, which weren’t distributed until 10.

While many got the wristbands and left, the true Twi-hards waited until doors opened at 6 p.m. Fifteen lucky fans of the hundreds in attendance were rewarded with one-on-one time with Welch.

How did the fans pass the time? Apart from vying chants of “Edward,” “Jacob,” and the occasional “Bella,” some devotees did arts and crafts. Stephanie Davis and Anita Goldberg, both 15, brought the materials to make posters for Welch and sketched his portrait. They also wrote a note to Jackson Rathborne, who plays vampire Jasper in the film, that they hope Welch will pass along.

“We saw [Rathborne] at an event in Aventura,” Goldberg said. “He’ll remember us.”

“I’ve told my parents that either I’m going to the Breaking Dawn premier, or I’m running away,” Davis said. Such dedication is not rare among the fans. “If I hadn’t had been able to get out of work, I would have quit,” said Renee Vankuren, 32, who took off from her job as a waitress in Key Largo at 8 a.m. to get her wristband. “There are tons of other jobs out there.”

Welch feels only gratitude towards Twilight fans, which he claims range from 90-year-olds to toddlers. “But I think that could just be moms dressing up their kids.”

Welch is a part of the Twilight convention circuit and has even come to recognize a few fans that follow the conventions. “They are like Trekkies or Dead Heads, Phish fans or people who think Clapton is God,” he said.

Michael Jackson’s Brother Jermaine Celebrates King Of Pop On ‘Larry King’

Michael Jackson’s family and friends gathered at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, to lay the King of Pop to rest in the Grand Mausoleum. Almost one year later, shortly before the actual anniversary of his death, MJ’s brother Jermaine returned to the site to tape an interview with Larry King. “It’s been tough,” Jermaine told the talk-show host. “It went so fast. We’ve been just putting the pieces together and the family’s been having a lot of meetings and we’re just trying to hold on. We haven’t come to terms. It’s something we’re learning to live with. We will never accept it.”

Speaking softly and quietly, Jackson said the inside of the mausoleum is dark and cold. “To walk this corridor, and all you hear is your footsteps. Michael shouldn’t be here. I always felt that,” he said, adding that MJ should have been buried at his Neverland Ranch estate.

A year later, Jackson said Michael’s three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, are enjoying as normal a life as possible. They love movies, Jermaine said, though he is not sure if they’ve seen “This Is It,” the documentary about Michael’s final months as he prepared for what were to be his comeback shows in London. Jermaine also revealed that they do not visit their father’s gravesite at Forest Lawn.

Each of the family members, Jackson said, continues to grieve in their own ways. And they continue to raise questions about the circumstances surrounding MJ’s death. Jermaine acknowledged that numerous interventions had been made concerning Michael’s use of various prescription medications but denied any suggestion that his brother did not want to live. Rather, Jermaine said the family believes Michael was murdered and that Dr. Conrad Murray, the singer’s personal physician who was charged with involuntary manslaughter as a result of MJ’s propofol overdose, is not the sole person responsible for the death.

“All of us feel that he’s the fall guy,” Jermaine said. “It’s higher up than just the doctor. “He did say on numerous occasions, at times to my mother, that he felt that he was being threatened, someone was trying to kill him,” Jermaine added about his brother. While the Jackson family awaits the start of Murray’s trial, which they plan to attend, they lament the way the pop singer has been treated by the media, the public and prosecutors in the years before his death.

“If you listen to the content of his lyrics and his music, that’s what he is, that’s what he wrote from his heart, from his soul,” Jackson said. “And it’s sad, because now people realize what kind of person he was all along. But he’s not here to see that. He got a bum rap because he was so misunderstand. He was trying to take the world on his shoulders and to bring an awareness to the world of what we need to do as people.”

Fans Everywhere Remember MJ at his first Death Anniversary

As the first anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death drew near, Julia Thomas clutched her “Thriller” liner notes and stood outside the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, Calif., the final resting place for the King of Pop, with about two dozen other fans.

“Michael has just always been a part of my life,” the 40-year-old Thomas, who has a tattoo of Jackson’s dancing feet on her left wrist, said Thursday night. “I’m just hoping to embrace the fans from everywhere.”

Barricades were already set up at the Los Angeles-area cemetery for the huge throng of fans and some of Jackson’s family members expected to arrive on Friday, which marks a year since Jackson died at age 50. Five large wreaths of flowers and dozens of bouquets, drawings and photos of Jackson had been placed outside his private mausoleum.

Evdokia Sofianou, 46, and her 9-year-old daughter, Rebecca, traveled from Athens, Greece, to pay their respects.

“I came because I love Michael very much,” Sofianou said. “I came to grieve.”

Forest Lawn was to be just one of the many places around the world where Jackson’s fans would gather to remember their fallen legend on Friday. But not everyone planned to be grieving.

On Friday, DJ Jon Quick was to spin Jackson tunes at the club Taj in Manhattan for a festive affair. “They wanna celebrate his life and music,” Quick said of the expected partygoers. “His albums are like timelines in your life. You can remember what you were doing … when ‘Thriller’ came out.”

Some anniversary events began even before Friday. In London, a memorial was unveiled Thursday to a gaggle of press who packed the foyer of the Lyric Theatre, the site of an impromptu wake following the pop superstar’s death last year.

Perri Luc Kiely, 14, a member of the dance troupe Diversity, pulled back a pair of dark purple curtains to reveal a small plaque featuring a young Jackson with a wide, beaming smile. In Hong Kong, Jackson imitators performed to the late singer’s classics at a suburban mall Thursday. Four-year-old Wang Yiming danced to “Dangerous” wearing Jackson’s trademark black fedora hat, a black suit with a silver armband and white socks.

In Gary, Ind., Jackson’s hometown, there was to be a tribute at the family home; city officials said they expected Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, and his niece Genevieve Jackson to show up, along with thousands of others. But his brother Randy Jackson was hoping to make the official family commemoration at Forest Lawn on Friday morning.

“My family and I will be in attendance as we mourn the loss of my brother,” he said in a statement Thursday. “I would like to thank the fans and friends for their continued love, support and prayers.”

Katherine Jackson has thrown her support behind a “Forever Michael” fan event to be held Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. Tickets range from $150 to $500.

The Apollo Theater in Harlem, where a young Michael Jackson and his brothers won amateur night, on Friday was to host a commemoration of Jackson’s life in front of the recently installed plaque honoring him in the legendary theater’s new hall of fame.

And later in the afternoon in Harlem, around the hour of Jackson’s death, the Rev. Al Sharpton and his National Action Network were to hold a moment of silence.

Sharpton, a longtime associate of Jackson and his family, gave impassioned remarks at Jackson’s televised memorial last July and said he thought a moment of silence was appropriate to show “the sanctity of the hour.”

“He meant a lot to us of all races in terms of bringing us together in another kind of spirit,” Sharpton said. “I wanted to make sure that we showed that in the middle of all this that is going on in the world that Michael is someone that we would all stop for … . He was more than just a singer, he was a social force and a sense of inspiration.”
